McMisanthrope’s Top 25 – December 2, 2007
Where the BCS demonstrates its worthlessness …
1. Hawaii (12-0): Sad thing is, I suspect most of the East Coast mediots went to bed when it was 21-zip, Washington. Too bad. They missed a great performance from Colt Brennan. Sure, Washington isn’t a great team, but they did beat Boise State. And Boise State beat Oklahoma last year, and that’s good enough for me. I don’t suggest Hawaii should necessarily be in the BCS title game, because unless that game was played in Hawaii with Samoan referees, the Rainbow Warriors would get killed. But you have to respect any team that goes 12-0. If you don’t, you have no respect for the student-athletes themselves (and that’s probably because you weren’t a collegiate student-athlete yourself -- which means you really have a worthless opinion. Hi media voters!).
2. Ohio State (11-1): Kind of weird they are back in the title game. I cannot imagine they will lose the title game two years in a row, but if it’s against LSU in New Orleans, all bets are off. I like the Buckeyes; I respect Tressel. Can he will them to a win in the BCS title game this year? They really will be focused to erase the memories of last year. I suspect they'll win it this time out, because they know they have to EARN it this year.
3. Kansas (11-1): I could care less if they didn’t win their conference. That’s never been a prerequisite for anything: remember Washington in 1984? They didn’t even play in the Rose Bowl, because USC actually won the Pac-10 that year. But Washington was the non-BYU choice for the MNC. There is absolutely NO WAY the BCS can allow a two-loss team in the BCS title game over a one-loss BCS conference team like Kansas. Seriously, you might as well just cancel the regular season and stick the preseason favorites in the BCS title game if Kansas gets ignored. The whole regular season will become worthless if USC, Oklahoma or LSU makes the title game.
4. Oklahoma (11-2): They looked good beating Missouri TWICE. As it was noted, does any other team have that kind of resume? No. I have been dogging the Sooners off-and-on all year, but at this point, they’re the best of the two-loss BCS conference champions. Yes, they’d probably beat Kansas, too, but one loss is still better than two losses.
5. USC (10-2): They probably should have beaten UCLA by more. If they had, they would have strengthened their argument for the title game. They needed that 66-19 drubbing they placed on UCLA in 2005, basically. They’re a good team, but they’re not BCS title game worthy. Maybe that’s what college football has become, though: just a bunch of good teams and no great ones. All the more reason for a playoff, since arbitrarily picking two good teams to fight it out is just illogical. On a lighter note, I am glad I do not have to eat my laptop.
6. LSU (11-2): I see this argument on RSFC hourly, but nothing LSU does impresses me. Tennessee is not a good football team, and I’ve been saying this since they lost to Cal three months ago. And all LSU could manage was a defensive TD to win? Florida beat the Vols by 39 points; Alabama beat the Vols by 24 points. And a 6-6 Cal team beat the Vols by 14 points. Mighty LSU? Beat the Vols by seven points. Sorry, that just wasn’t impressive enough. Like USC’s ho-hum win over UCLA (another 6-6 Pac-10 team that would throttle the Vols, I am sure), LSU didn’t do anything yesterday to justify a spot in the BCS title game. Oklahoma beat the #1 team by significantly more than LSU beat the Vols. Seriously, people -- WAKE UP. Louisiana State sucks, and you're remembering their preseason hype and nothing more. When was the last time LSU actually played like a Top 2 team? September 8.
7. Virginia Tech (11-2): They’re better than LSU right now, but that September 8 loss doesn’t get erased no matter how unfair it was at the time. I think Virginia Tech is another good team, but they’re not a great team. If they hadn’t blown those last two minutes against Boston College at home, they’d be in the title game – and we’d be spared this BCS joke. Oh well; a lot of teams can ask “What if?” this year, and the Hokies are at the front of that line. Congrats to them for winning the ACC in this very tough season. They earned it.
8. West Virginia (10-2): Several RSFC threads pointed out they choked. Well? They did. Steve Slaton had 11 yards on nine carries. Hello?! This team has never lived up to the hype it earned with that 2005 season. They had a hand-delivered chance to do so yesterday, and they lost to Dave Wannstadt. Pathetic. The Big East sure dropped the ball this season, no pun intended. Of all the two-loss conference champions, they’re the only ones who ended the season with a loss. That’s why they’re here.
** INTERJECTION: If this was a better sport, and there was a playoff system, these eight teams would be in it: six BCS conference champs, and the next best two at-large teams.

10. Missouri (11-2): So predictable they would lose the Big XII title game. Sad for them.
11. Georgia (10-2): Still not sure how and why they lost to Tennessee, but they did. That’s enough to keep them out of my Top Ten.
12. Boise State (10-2): If they hadn’t lost to Washington, they would be much higher. See? Hawaii was better.
13. BYU (10-2): Did anyone outside the Mountain West Conference even notice the Cougars this year?
14. Boston College (10-3): They let Virginia Tech hang around in the first half, and it cost them. No shame in a ten-win season for the Golden Eagles.
15. Florida (9-3): I’d like to see Illinois vs. Florida in the Citrus Bowl.
16. Illinois (9-3): I’d like to see Illinois vs. Florida in the Citrus Bowl.
17. Wisconsin (9-3): Barry Who?
18. Clemson (9-3): Yawn.
19. Texas (9-3): For an off year, they still can win ten games. Weird.
20. Virginia (9-3): Zzzzz.
21. Cincinnati (9-3): The Bearcats have the guy Michigan should hire if they can’t get Harbaugh.
22. Connecticut (9-3): Ho-hum.
